A comparison of localization judgments and pointing precision.

چکیده
We compared the precision of perceptual localization and manual pointing. A Gaussian blob was presented 6 degrees to the right or left of a central fixation spot on a CRT screen. Above and below the blob, vertical lines were displayed. On each trial, the blob was slightly offset to the right or left with respect to the lines. The subjects had to judge whether the blob appeared to the right or to the left of the vertical lines. At the same time, they had to point to the center of the blob with their index finger. Precision for perceived position was significantly better than precision for pointing. Performance in these two tasks correlated highly between the subjects. Overall, subjects pointed more leftward on trials where they judged the blob to be to the left of the lines. There was also a significant correlation for each subject between the pointing error and the perceived location error, calculated by partialling out the effect of the physical offset. The results are in agreement with the idea that the signals determining the perceived location of an object are used to guide the motor system in pointing toward it.

Pointing and Visual Feedback for Spatial Interaction in Large-Screen Display Environments
The two visual systems hypothesis in neuroscience suggests that pointing without visual feedback may be less affected by spatial visual illusions than cognitive interactions such as judged target location. Our study examined predictions of this theory for target localization on a large-screen display. We contrasted pointing interactions under varying levels of visual feedback with location judg...
متن کاملInitial visual information determines endpoint precision for rapid pointing
We investigated how visual noise in the initial estimate of target location affects precision for rapid pointing. Visual localization thresholds (an error measure) rise systematically with eccentricity, doubling at eccentricities of a degree or less. Previous work, which we confirmed, has shown that the precision of pointing, measured by the standard deviation, to a single isolated target is re...
متن کاملA Rssi Based Localization Algorithm for WSN Using a Mobile Anchor Node
Wireless sensor networks attracting a great deal of research interest. Accurate localization of sensor nodes is a strong requirement in a wide area of applications. In recent years, several techniques have been proposed for localization in wireless sensor networks. In this paper we present a localization scheme with using only one mobile anchor station and received signal strength indicator tec...
متن کاملSpatial distortions and processing latencies in the onset repulsion and Fröhlich effects
In the Fröhlich illusion, the first position of a moving target is mis-localized in the direction of motion. In the onset repulsion effect, the opposite error occurs. To reconcile these conflicting error patterns, we improved previous methods by using natural pointing movements and a large range of target velocities. Displacement was found to increase in the direction of motion, but the linear ...
متن کاملPointing to places and spaces in a patient with visual form agnosia.
Previous investigations of visuospatial abilities in the visual form agnosic patient D.F. suggest that her egocentric sensorimotor processing is intact while her 'allocentric' judgments of spatial position are impaired. The current investigation extends these previous observations by comparing D.F.'s performance at pointing to a set of spatially distributed stimuli, either directly or by 'panto...
